Cybersecurity for Tofino Businesses: What's Actually Happening, and What You Can Do About It
Join Logan of Kinbote_ Security on April 21st for a practical, locally-grounded session on the cyber threats affecting Tofino businesses right now. This is not a technical lecture or a sales pitch - this is an honest look at the attacks hitting our community, explained in plain language, with real examples and actionable takeaways.
Phishing attacks, business email compromise, and ransomware are increasingly targeting small and mid-sized businesses across BC. Tofino is no exception. In recent months, several local organizations have been affected; in some cases losing access to email accounts, in others receiving fraudulent payment requests crafted to look like trusted suppliers or colleagues. Most businesses don't know they've been compromised until significant damage has already been done. Many may never know...
This session will pull back the curtain on how these attacks actually work, using high-level, real-time demonstrations of modern hacking methods. We'll walk through how a phishing campaign is built and launched, and what happens inside a mailbox once an account has been taken over. We'll discuss the next evolution of phishing, and how to get ahead of the curve so your business can stay safe. The goal is to step inside the mind of an attacker and demystify their process, allowing everyone to make informed business decisions from a place of confidence, not fear.
The session will close with a look at a new local initiative: a free threat-sharing network for Tofino businesses, designed to give our community advanced warning when campaigns are active in the area.
The session will run approximately 60–90 minutes, followed by an optional open Q&A and live analysis of any suspicious emails attendees would like to examine together.
Attendees will leave with:
* A clear understanding of how modern phishing and email compromise attacks work
* Practical knowledge of what to do (and what not to do) if something goes wrong
* Free tools and fixes that can be implemented the same day
* Access to a free local cybersecurity threat-sharing network
