This event will give local businesses and organizations the opportunity to be introduced to the Tribal Parks Alliance Certification (TPAC) system, a way for locals and visitors to contribute to the stewardship of Tla-o-qui-aht traditional territory. Your input into the development of this voluntary program is being asked and will be necessary in order for it to be successful. Calling all business owners and representatives in the Tofino/Long Beach area,

You are invited to attend the 2018 Tofino Tribal Parks Tourism Summit hosted jointly by the Tofino-Long Beach Chamber of Commerce and the Tla-o-qui-aht First Nation, at which Tla-o-qui-aht Tribal Parks will introduce and seek feedback for the new Tribal Parks Allies certification (TPAC) standard.

The TPAC standard provides an opportunity for non-Indigenous residents and visitors of Tla-o-qui-aht haḥuułi (traditional territory) to participate in stewardship of Tla-o-qui-aht lands and waters. To achieve certification businesses will be asked to recognize the inherent and constitutional right of the Tla-o-qui-aht people to manage and monitor the haḥuułi, to cooperate with certification standards, and to collect an ecosystem service fee from visitors. In turn, Tla-o-qui-aht Tribal Parks will recognize participating businesses as “Allies” to the First Nation, give them the right to display the TPAC logo (which will be unveiled at this summit), and extend their commitment to seek ways to deepen relationships between our communities.

Please come to the Tin-Wis Best Western Hotel (1119 Pacific Rim Highway, Tofino BC, V0R 2Z0)from 9:30am-1pm on Thursday, November 22ndto learn about our vision for the TPAC standard and to help it take shape. The summit will be held in the Tin-Wis conference centre. A free lunch will be provided at noon, and snacks and refreshments will be available throughout the event.

The Tourism Summit will include:
  • Welcoming ceremony and presentation about the history and vision of Tribal Parks
  • Introduction of the Tribal Parks Alliance and how it will contribute to the administration of the Tla-o-qui-aht Tribal Parks
  • Opportunities to share input about the ecosystem service fee, certification criteria, vision and implementation
  • Support workshops from local business leaders
  • Information, resources and certification application forms will be made available as we share a meal together
