To our valued members,

The board of directors of the Tofino-Long Beach Chamber of Commerce wished to let you know about some changes to the funding for the Tofino Ambassador Program this year. The Chamber has run this program since 2011, and since 2013 has partnered with the Raincoast Education Society as the course delivery partner. There have been steady increases in participation over the years, with the highest enrollment in 2017 when 378 people – both local and seasonal – took the classes.

What is the Tofino Ambassador Program?
TAP consists of four courses: the introductory Small Town, Big Picture course, the Ecology series (Marine Ecology and Rainforest Ecology), and Nuu-chah-nulth Landscape. Each of these courses offers a unique perspective on life in the Pacific Rim area, with a wide variety of useful and fascinating information. The aim is to build community, encourage a positive attitude among responsible citizens, and strengthen the connection to this place through knowledge. The Small Town, Big Picture course covers history to civic information, from emergency preparedness to basic ecology, and a whole lot more.

How is TAP funded?
In the past, the TAP program was jointly and fully funded by the District of Tofino’s Resort Municipality Initiative (RMI) funding and Tourism Tofino’s MRDT (Municipal and Regional District Tax program) funding as well as through Chamber of Commerce in-kind sources (staff time). In 2017, Tourism Tofino took on the full funding when the District did not continue with RMI funding. With uncertainty in the RMI program and Tourism Tofino’s commitment in 2018 to fund half the program costs, the Chamber is investigating all possible funding sources to make up the difference needed to ensure this program continues to be offered free of charge to newcomers and Tofino residents this year and in the coming years.
The 2018 Business Excellence Awards will be a fundraiser for the Tofino Ambassador Program, and we are offering corporate sponsorships and onsite course instruction for your staff at a cost. See below for details.

How can my business help?
First and foremost, please send your employees to one of these valuable courses. It is free training about Tofino and has the added benefit of sharing information on being a responsible Tofitian. We recommend that even seasoned staff take the Small Town, Big Picture course every year to two years because of the amount of information that is added each year. We guarantee you’ll learn something new! Course dates will be announced soon for April to June.
Also, you can support us by hosting an onsite course this year. At a cost of $250, our instructor will visit your business to deliver this program to a group of your staff and will even tailor it to your business if possible.
Please also plan on attending the 2018 Business Excellence Awards and consider becoming a sponsor of this event. More information soon to follow!
Businesses can also directly sponsor the Ambassador Program, and your business will be acknowledged as a sponsor during the program and in press and promotional material.
Finally, we offer local discounts to course participants. Would you like to offer a discount? Please contact us: info@tofinochamber.org.

And feel free to contact TLBCC executive director Jen Dart with any questions about the program or sponsorships at jendart@tofinochamber.org.
