The District of Tofino's Source Control Regulation Bylaw (SCRB) is designed to protect the municipal wastewater system and the local environment by regulating the discharge of various substances into the public sewer system. It applies to all residential, commercial, industrial, and institutional users, setting specific limitations on hazardous materials and outlining monitoring and enforcement measures to ensure compliance.

Businesses, particularly those discharging non-domestic wastewater—such as, but not limited to, industrial facilities—are required to obtain a Wastewater Discharge Permit. This permit specifies conditions for the type and quantity of waste that can be released into the sewer system. Non-compliance with the SCRB can lead to fines, penalties, or other enforcement actions as outlined in the District’s Municipal Ticket Information System Bylaw.

Example Situation:
A local restaurant in Tofino that discharges grease and food particles into the sewer system must install and maintain grease traps to prevent these substances from entering the wastewater infrastructure. Failure to implement these measures could lead to blockages, damage to the sewer system, and potential fines for the business. By complying with the SCRB, the restaurant helps protect municipal infrastructure and contributes to environmental conservation efforts.
